At one extreme an instruction manual for a vanished profession, on the other extreme, a window into a ocrtesano world of glitter and intrigue – and a philosophy of living that survives beyond mere history.
The rules apply to a courtier who must follow these rules: This loveliness, indeed, is impressed upon the body in varying degrees as a token by which the soul can be recognized for what it is, just as with trees the beauty of the blossom testifies to the goodness of the fruit. The sections that follow spend quite a bit of time discussing the qualities of an excellent court lady.
What was interesting for me in this book, apart from the way it documents a particular moment in history, was the way it overlapped with other books I’d been reading, in particular Alison Cole’s Italian Renaissance Courts which included sections on several of the people mentioned in Castiglione’s book and which explained the relationship between the Montefeltros and the other noble families in fifteenth and sixteenth century Italy.
However, it will probably be of little to no interest to anyone not interested in the time period, but if the Italian Renaissance floats your boat as it does mine, clearly this is absolutely worth the read.
It’s castiglionne but it’s way too archaic to keep the reader engaged. The forceful argument for the equality of women given by one gentleman on the second evening is an eye opener in a work composed in the opening castigkione of the 16th century. But it can lead to a culture, especially on social media, of publicly shaming people for minor actions; expressing political viewpoints that may be liberal, but are not liberal enough.

It is as though Castiglione is the little angel talking into the prince’s right ear, while Machiavelli is the little devil talking into his left.
A definite period piece but useful for anyone interested in the period. What he should study. I was surprised at how good and well written this book is props to George Bull for his translation.

Castiglione was himself a courtier, and his book presents a series of discussions that take place over the course of 4 evenings in the chambers of the duchess of Urbino in Nonetheless, there are moments in this book which are enlightening, amusing, and very important in the understanding of gender relations, religion, culture, and of course literature.

The author his hiding behind these characters. His metaphor for aging and changing perceptions was insanely on point in my opinion. Some hold that a lady should only love when it is possible to marry; others, not. A primer for sycophants, Castiglione offers a guide to the intelligent, though for the most part unemployable, person with little talent. Sometimes, like this book mantains, disciples are even better than the master because their influences come more from their own good intellect and judgement. So, this was assigned reading for me, and yet I still liked it.

The last speaker cxstiglione that no, he could fulfill the role of lover of beauty, because true beauty is a thing in itself, a gift of God, and is not inherent in the thing that exhibits it.

La Muta means the silent one — which fits well with corttesano role of the women in this book. Or in other words – a How To for aristocrats and courtier-wannabes. View all 3 comments. To modern readers, however, the place of women in this society for not seem like very much. Dancing, fighting, badinage, sport; these activities must be accomplished with seeming effortlessness, with an internalized grace that effaces the labor required to master the art.
It picked up in the middle where the dialogue gets heated, but it still took me close to two hours to get through twenty pages. Although it is three months since I returned home, and although the other two books have been finished and reviewed months ago, this book has hung on, if not to my attention, at least to its place on my reading pile — though fifteen further books were finished in the meantime.
